The Central African Republic (CAR) has faced decades of violence and political instability, creating an ongoing humanitarian crisis. Today, 1.3 million children are in urgent need of assistance, with 1.2 million lacking access to education and 851,000 requiring protection services. Conflict has displaced nearly 488,000 people, half of them children. In addition to conflict, malnutrition is a major issue, with 40% of children under five suffering from acute malnutrition, while nearly half of children have no access to health services. Despite ceasefires, violence persists, making CAR one of the most challenging environments for children.
Children in Conflict, through its network of local partners, has been providing critical support to vulnerable children in the CAR since 2014. In 2023, we reached over 22,000 children and adults with programs focused on protection, education, and mental health. Our work includes reintegrating children recruited by armed groups, providing mental health support through counseling and play-based activities like the War Child Football Club, and running child-friendly spaces where children can learn and heal. We also deliver vital awareness-raising sessions on gender-based violence and child rights, while promoting peacebuilding through youth-led advocacy. Through collaboration with local authorities, we ensure children receive civil documentation and access to safer futures.
